Navajo Rugs



People have been making rugs for a long time. During such a long history of development each country in the world have created its own type of rugs. Everyone knows Oriental rug or Persian rug. These are great examples of rugs making in Asian region. It is believed that rugs weaving started there. And only much later rugs weaving craft came into Europe where it has gained its own style.

On the American continent there were no rugs as we see them today. It is only in 1890 first Navajo rugs appeared.
Rug made by Native Americans were a sort of blankets. Most known of them are Navajo rugs blanket and Mohawk rug blankets.

These Navajo rugs were made as a sort of clothing - that is why they were long and narrow like blanket. For protection from bad weather and as floor covering native American were still using animal skins. Although any person could were these Navajo rugs they were call chief blankets.


Designs pictured on these Navajo rugs blankets were symbols of everyday life of Native Americans. Some sort of line and diamond of different color were also usual for Navajo rugs blankets.
Although Native Americans were never making actual rugs in 1890 they moved from Navajo blanket to Navajo rugs. These Navajo rugs are being sold to the tourists and still look more like blankets. All the modern Navajo rugs designs are made to satisfy clients’ needs.
These day Navajo rugs are made in reservations (mostly in Northern Arizona) and are rare type of rug.
