Capel Rugs

Rugs’ weaving is a hard and time-consuming craft. Specially treated fibers are usually necessary and sometimes loom is also needed. And it takes a lot of time to make a single rug with this technique. Although the quality of these weaved rugs is great they are very hard to make.
In contrast to very difficult and complex procedure of weaving rugs in several countries people started to make braided rugs.

It is much easier then weaving regular rugs and these braided rugs do not need special fibers. First braided rugs were made by western farmers from old clothes. Capel rugs are among these easy to make rugs.

To make them people cut their worn pants and shirts into stripes and then braided them like a girl's hair. These braids were then tied together to form capel rugs. Such capel rugs were made more then a century ago.
Making of capel rugs is very simple - you can even make them at home.

All you need to start making your capel rugs is some sort of fibers. Form long stripes from fiber you chose (it does not matter what type of fiber you use for your capel rugs natural or synthetic - just don’t mix different types of your capel rugs will be damaged later) -you could just braid them - no special tools are needed for that. Then you can dye color your stripes if you have not found fiber of needed colors (cotton is easy to dye color at home). And then just tight these stripes together to form the canvas of the rug. That is all you need o know to make capel rugs.
