Rugs weaving has a very long history. Area rug were always used to decorate a home with them. It is a wonderful material for any designer and home decorator. With just simple rugs you can totally change the mood of a room. Modern technology offers you a great variety of rugs.
These day rugs of many different forms are made.
Runner is a form of area rug - runner area rugs are long and narrow. All the rugs that are more than twice as long as they are wide (up to three and a half feet wide - all the rugs that are wider are called long rugs) are runner area rug. These rugs are often used in very long locations such as stairways or hallways.
Although these days all the rug of specific form are called runner area rugs at they were a special kind of rugs made with religion purposes. Runner area rugs originated from Turkish prayer rugs.
Religion plays a major role in Turks life. That is why most of the Turkish area rugs are prayer area rug.
Runner area rugs are among them - such rugs were made so to allow several people to pray at once - that is why they are very long. Different ornamental and religion designs and patterns are used in runner area rugs - some sort of geometric form combined in a special way and medallions. Nature motifs (like spiders for example) can be found in Caucasian runner area rugs.
Real runner area rugs are very unique and rare. It is hard to find real high quality Turkish or Caucasian runner area rug.
